FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 11, 2021) – Washington senior RJ Manke has been voted The Ben Hogan Award’s October Golfer of the Month following committee and social media voting. Manke is the second straight winner from the Pac-12 Conference and the league’s third recipient in the last four months.
Manke, who also was tabbed the Pac-12 Golfer of the Month, claimed medalist honors at both the Fighting Irish Classic and the Oregon State Invitational. In the process, he led Washington to a pair of team victories.
The product of Lakewood, Wash., fired a 12-under 198 (67-67-64) for a one-shot victory at the Fighting Irish Classic. He also tallied a 9-under 204 during his five-shot win at the Oregon State Invitational. Manke logged a 67.00 stroke average across six rounds in October.
He is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in the Golfstat individual rankings, sixth in the Golfweek college individual rankings, six in the PGA TOUR University rankings, 17th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and 39th in the Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking.
The Ben Hogan Award’s monthly honor counts any college, amateur or professional event completed during the month. The other finalists for the September honor were senior Nick Lyerle of UNCG and sophomore Herman Sekne of Purdue.
Fifteen total ballots were cast, with 12 coming from members of the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation and Friends of Golf and three social media fan ballots. Those ballots were issued to the top vote getter on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The three split the votes as Manke claimed the Instagram vote, Lyerle won the Facebook ballot and Sekne took the Twitter vote.
The Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank is given each May to the top men’s college golfer taking into account all collegiate, amateur and professional competitions played over the previous 12 months. The Ben Hogan Trophy was first issued by the Friends of Golf at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles in 1990.
In 2002, the Ben Hogan Award moved to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, and revised its criteria to its current standard of honoring the outstanding amateur and collegiate golfer. Winning a monthly award is not a prerequisite to be named a semifinalist, finalist or winner of The Ben Hogan Award.
