FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 2, 2019) – The Ben Hogan Trophy Award Foundation has announced its three finalists for the Ben Hogan Award September Golfer of the Month honor are Cooper Dossey of Baylor, USC’s Yuxin Lin and John Pak of Florida State.
Dossey, a senior from Austin, Texas, won the individual title at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational by one stroke with a 4-under score of 206. He also placed fifth at the Gopher Invitational with a 3-round score of 211 (-2). For the month, he carried a 69.50 stroke average over two college tournaments and led the Bears to two team titles.
Lin, a freshman from Beijing, China, claimed the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship for the second time in his career, winning in a sudden-death playoff after a 72-hole score of 278 (-10). His victory earned him berths into the 2020 Masters and the 2020 Open Championship. In addition, he tied for 12th in his collegiate debut at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate with a 203 (-7).
Pak, a junior from Scotch Plains, N.J., was a member of victorious Team USA at the Walker Cup at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England. During the event, he posted a perfect 3-0-0 record, making him one of three players to win three matches at the event and the only one without a loss. He tied for 14th individually with a score of 213 (+3) at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational in his lone college event.
Eighteen total ballots are eligible to be cast, with 15 coming from members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and three social media fan ballots. Those votes are issued to the top vote getter on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
In line with the yearly Ben Hogan Award, voters consider all college, amateur and professional event results. Winning a monthly award is not a prerequisite to be named a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, finalist or winner.
The Ben Hogan Award is given each May to the top men’s college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions over the past 12 months. The Ben Hogan Trophy was first issued by the Friends of Golf at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles in 1990. In 2002, the Ben Hogan Award moved to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, and revised its criteria to its current standard of honoring the outstanding amateur and collegiate golfer.
